Exponential technologies aren't just the next 'big thing' somewhere down the road. No, in fact, they are happening right now! They transform the world as we know it today, at a faster rate than ever before.
You might think, well I just need to reskill once, and then I will be ready for the next 20 years. Nope, I hate to break it to you, but these technologies are not about incremental change. No, they turn the whole game on its head. While it has multiple implications and ramifications, in this article, we focus on its impact on the job market as we know it.
Let’s make sure we have a common understanding of the term ‘Exponential Technologies’.
If you have read our other article that covers the definition of Exponential technologies, this might feel like a repetition.
So please bear with me when we quickly go over the definition.
"Exponential technologies are technologies that grow in capability at an exponential rate, typically doubling their performance or price performance every 18 to 24 months. These technologies also have the potential to create massive economic impact and disrupt existing systems or industries."
Also, you might recall this list of exponential technologies:
Quick question before we move on. Is this the first time that you've come across these terms, or do you need a refresher? If so, then definitely check out this article here.
Technology is all about advancement and efficiency (for humanity). So if there will be new jobs, then they must make sure that they fit that role. They can also help us solve a new problem that arises with the technology. Either in isolation or in conjunction with society. As the saying goes, with great power, comes great responsibility. There is no question that these technologies are powerful, so let’s which jobs need to carefully handle that power.
While these are just a set of job roles that emerge, the job market as a whole will transform massively. As the adoption of technology creates jobs, it will also make others redundant.
So let’s have a look..
First of all a small disclaimer that these industries are just a pick from many possible industries, but we'll save that for another day. After all, you can't cover everything in one article.
Manufacturing
Think about all the robots that currently do a lot of the heavy-lifting or repetitive tasks. While this trend is ongoing for some time already, the usage of robotics only increases. A labor intensive industry that uses robots already is obviously within the manufacturing industry.
However, humanoid robots may remove the need for physical labor altogether. In simple terms, they are a robot with human characteristics. Sounds scary? Just hear me out, since I am not a director of some kind of Sci-Fi movie.
If you pair exponential technologies such as robotics with Artificial Intelligence, you create some superpowers that can accomplish some complex tasks. Just imagine that humanoid are just like humans, by and large they are ‘good’, not ‘evil’.
If these robots are as versatile as humans, then they can perform similar tasks without the degradation that humanity is burdened with, called the fragility of life.
Humanoid robots are expected to generate $154 billion in revenue according to Goldman Sachs Research by 2035. While these humanoids are currently limited by their battery life, the widespread usage of these robots will be unlocked when we can solve this problem. Looking at the rate of technology advancement, this would probably be sooner than later.
“Once humanoid robots are everywhere; physical labor will be a choice, not a necessity.” - Peter H. Diamandis
Education
Remember the Machine Learning Analyst? Well, if we can leverage the power of Generative AI, then we can ensure that people learn things they are interested in. Generative AI can draft a curriculum that is tailored to their personal needs.
This would mean that we might only need the best experts in their field to teach the world something. Subsequently, AI can generate the curriculum you are most interested in and hand it to you on a silver platter. Therefore, the jobs of teachers, in their broadest definition, are at risk. It does not matter whether you teach toddlers, students, or professionals. While many people like to be teachers, it does not need to be a bad thing.
Again, we started with the assumption that technology is all about advancement and efficiency for humanity. Teachers have more bandwidth to specialize in certain areas that they have the greatest interest in and not general topics such as math, history, or business.
While the removal of jobs may seem like a bad thing, I would argue it definitely shapes how we see work. After all, many people don’t like their job, so why would it be a bad thing?
…. Not convinced?
Well, according to the Gallup World Poll only 23% of employees feel engaged in their work. Maybe more striking is the fact that this 23% (in 2022) is a record high compared to previous years.

If 77% of the working population does not feel engaged, why wouldn’t we want these people to have the permission to find meaningful work?
If we can have technology to handle the ‘boring work’, would that not open up the possibility for all of us to do ‘meaningful work’?
All nice armchair philosophy, you might think, but how do you navigate these fast changing job markets?
Fair enough .. let’s proceed, shall we?
It is not a question whether the job market will be disrupted, it is a matter of when. This leads us to the natural question : "How can we set ourselves up for success?"
We want to make sure that we are not just adapting to or keeping up with the change. So how can we thrive in a transforming job market?
If there is one secret to thriving in such an environment, it would be having a Growth Mindset.
While this is quite an amorphous term, we strongly feel it is the way.
However, we always want it make it actionable and implementable. So, let me give you some examples :
Finally, leveraging the power of exponential technologies is also about embracing the flexibility and freedom it provides. As a business owner, having a business that provides you with flexibility and freedom is fantastic. After all, it is one of the Essential Eight of the Dream Business Formula. We have bundled the concept of flexibility and freedom into what we call Portability. If you are not familiar with this topic, definitely read our other article here.
Much like how portability offered businesses a taste of freedom, exponential technologies offer a similar benefit to employees. Think about it, whether you are a business owner or an employee. You can now work from anywhere, collaborating with colleagues from all over the world. Being location-independent allows people to work from their ideal location, but tap into global opportunities. Hence, it is not just about new jobs, it is about transforming the way we 'work' as a whole.
If you want to launch the business of your dream, but not yet sure how to start, then this is for you! The Dream Business Formula helps you get a workable plan in place to start and scale your business.
As always, thank you for spending your time with us, navigating the world of exponential technologies.
